What you should know about security screens

Posted on

If you are looking to get better home security, one way to do this is by having security screens installed on your windows. These are sturdy metal screens that are almost impossible to break, so someone can't pry through the screen and break window glass to gain entry into your home. Here are some things to know about these types of window screens.

They Offer You Different Levels of Protection

One thing to note about security screens is that there is not a one-size-fits-all window screen. Different types of security screens offer a different level of protection. Some will be more for protecting your windows in the event of a natural disaster or just keeping someone from accidentally breaking the window with a flying baseball, while others offer more home security protection to keep intruders out. Naturally, the price goes up when you want something with more security.

You Should Get Professional Installation

While it is possible to install these security screens on your own, getting professional installation is highly recommended. These are heavy window screens and not like your flimsy mesh window screens. Since you are getting them to protect your home, you should not leave it up to chance and hope that your DIY installation job is good enough. Plus, a professional will have it installed much quicker for you.

Torn and Ripped Screens Aren't an Issue

Even though these are meant more for home security, the screens also provide the same benefits regular mesh screens do. For example, the screen weaving is close together so that bugs and insects can't get through when a window is open. This is also a benefit with security screens, except it is even better because you won't get torn screens with holes big enough for insects to fit through.

There Are Some Disadvantages

As you can see, there are many benefits to choosing a security window screen; however, there are also some drawbacks. For one thing, they are a little pricey. You aren't just paying for a simple window screen, but one made of sturdy and hard steel that is meant to keep intruders out. So, naturally, they are going to be a little more expensive. You might also be paying more if you choose to have a professional install it. Another potential drawback is that if you accidentally lock yourself out of your house, you won't be able to use a window to get in. While mesh screens are not difficult to remove from a window, these screens definitely can't be. You will need to be extra careful about having your keys on you at all times.
